Cullowhee, N.C. - Junior Caleb Bailey is representing Western Carolina at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas this week. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native will be running the 800 meter race, which he holds the WCU record for (1:48.49).
There will be two heats of competitors in the preliminary race, set for 4:15 Central Time on Friday, March 14. The top two racers in each heat automatically qualify for the finals and the next four fastest runners from either of the two heats advance to the final race.
Bailey will be racing in heat two against some very tough competition. Included in the second heat are Robby Stevens of Arkansas (1:48.69), Christian Smith of Kansas State (1:48.66), Otukile Lekote of South Carolina (1:46.88), Fred Sharpe of Auburn (1:47.53), Toby Henkels of Minnesota (1:48.23), Nate Brannen of Michigan (1:48.20) and Joseph Lee of Kansas State (1:48.51).
"This is the toughest event to get into," said head coach Danny Williamson. "All of the competitors are so close in qualifying times; it's really anyone's race."
