Cullowhee, N.C. -
Fresh off winning the Southern Conference men's indoor track & field championship and garnering the league's men's indoor coach of the year honor, Western Carolina head coach, Danny Williamson, was named the NCAA Division-I Southeast Regional men's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year on Friday. The southeast region consists of the states of North and South Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky.
This season's award marks the third in the illustrious career of Williamson and his staff. The previous two occasions were in 1999 during the outdoor season and in 2004, also an indoor track & field recognition. National coaches will choose the National Coach of the Year out of all the other regional coaches.
The award has been given since the NCAA Division I Coaches Association was formed more than 50 years ago. It is awarded to the top coaches and athletes in each NCAA division by the United States Track Coaches Association. National men's and women's Coaches of the Year will be named after the NCAA Championships in Arkansas with the winner voted on by his/her peers.
"This is a great honor to receive and it is because of the hard work and dedication of a lot of student-athletes - they deserve a lot of the credit for this award," said Williamson. "But also, this is an award for our entire coaching staff. They have put in ton of hard work and long hours. Our entire program, both athletes and all the coaches will share in this award."
Williamson has earned the SoCon coach of the year a combined 19 times between men's and women's, indoor and outdoor track and field.
