Cullowhee, N.C. - With a high jump of six feet in the Florida Fast Times Invitational last week, Virginia LaCombe earned her way to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championhips this weekend in Arkansas. Her jump broke a WCU record of 5'10", which she set ealier in the season.
LaCombe, the reigning Southern Conference high jump champion, currently has the fourth-best effort in the United States in the event. She was a provisional qualifier last year for Western with a jump of 5'9.75". She will be the first Catamount to participate it the NCAA Indoors since pole vaulter Valerie Jalajas participated in 2000.
LaCombe is also an All-American candidate for the Catamounts this year. She is the first one since Von Ross received the honor in 1991 for women's long jump. Western Carolina's only other All-American was Tony McKennie, who got the nod in 1989 for men's 400m hurdles.
LaCombe will jump at 3:45 pm on Saturday afternoon.
