Spartanburg, S.C. - Twelve Western Carolina University indoor track and field athletes have been named to the TIAA-CREF Academic All-Southern Conference team for winter 2003. A total of 77 student-athletes, representing all 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team. The 77 student-athletes averaged a 3.565 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Three men made the list. Sophomores Darius Bryson and Jason Stepp, who have not yet declared a major, carry a 3.31 and 3.39 GPA, respectively, while sophomore David McCall has a 3.30 in Phychology.

Nine women graced the team, including sophomore Leslie Martin with a team-high 3.87 GPA in Elementary Education. Senior Melanie Cooper boast a 3.84 in Art, Kineta Williams-Rogers has a 3.62 in Social Work and Tricia Shepard carries a 3.37 in Sport Management. Junior Randi Miles holds a 3.28 in Business Administration and Law, Jerrine Peeler has a 3.20 in Natural Resource Management and Michelle Velez holds a 3.62 GPA in Accounting. Sophomore Tonya Edmonds carries a 3.24 GPA, while Laura Tieszen has a 3.60. Both sophomores have yet to declare a major.

Western Carolina boasts the most student-athletes on the first ever Academic All-Southern Conference team. The Cats also had three make the list from women's basketball. Yoneko Allen, Christy Blackwell and Janetta Heggins were named to the team, while Emre Atsur represented the men's basketball team on the list.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the winter. This is the first time that the Southern Conference has named an All-Academic Team by season. This new honor is made possible by a grant from the Southern Conference's Education Partner, TIAA-CREF.
