CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Catamount track & field teams are set to begin the 2011 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Saturday at the Indoor Track Complex at Clemson University in Clemson, S.C. It will be the sixth consecutive year that the indoor championship will be held in Clemson.
The championship will begin Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the women's pentathlon, followed by four of the men's heptathlon events at 10:15 a.m. The championship will continue throughout the day Saturday and into Sunday, with the awards ceremony scheduled to begin Sunday at 4:40.
Western Carolina looks to repeat as indoor champions, as the women brought home their sixth indoor title a year ago. The men also had a very strong showing, finishing as runners-up to Appalachian State.
Once again, this year's championship should be another successful showing for the Catamounts, as WCU is ranked just behind their rivals at Appalachian State in the SoCon's newest power rankings.
"We are going into this championship as the underdog on both sides," said head coach Danny Williamson.
"ASU is predicted to come away with both team titles, so we are looking forward to putting up a fight and challenge to put ourselves in position to be in contention when the competition gets near the end of the second day. If we go and do what we are capable of then we have given ourselves an excellent opportunity to make some noise. I feel very good about our athletes and their ability to perform well at this championship competition."
In the most recent power rankings, which include meets through Feb. 20, Appalachian State leads in both the men's and women's standings, followed by Western Carolina. Samford is third in the rankings for the men while Georgia Southern is third for the women.
The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend's championships.
If Western Carolina picks up another title, it will be the third in the last four years for the Purple and Gold.
The event is free to the public. Live results can be found on SoConSports.com, with results and recaps from both days located on CatamountSports.com.
