Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men's and women's track and field teams will compete at the Southern Conference Championships that will be held Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25-26 at the Indoor Track & Field Complex on the campus of Clemson University in Clemson, S.C.

The championships begin Thursday at 9:00 am with the women's pentathlon, followed by four men's heptathlon events at 9:15 a.m. The awards ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Friday at 4:40 p.m.

The most recent power rankings, which include meets through February 20, have Appalachian State, Western Carolina and Samford in the top three spots for both men and women. The Mountaineers lead on the men's side and are second for the women, while the Catamounts took first for the women and second for the men. Samford rounds out the top three for both.

The rankings are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend's championships.

Western Carolina has one NCAA provisional qualifier in Cordell Livingston in the men's 60-meter hurdles after the freshman set a time of 7.85 seconds at the Niswonger Invitational on January 22.

The Catamounts are looking to continue their reign in the track and field championships after the men won the outdoor title in 2009, while the women placed second. Appalachian State won both team titles in the 2009 indoor championships.

There are 14 defending individual champions competing in this year's championships, including three Catamounts. Matt Evans (high jump), Janet' Carothers (400-meter dash) and Felicia Paulding (60-meter and 200-meter dash) all return to defend their 2009 individual titles.

The meet is free to the public. Live results will be available at the conclusion of each event at the official timing website at cfptiming.com. Daily recaps will be available online at CatamountSports.com
