Western Carolina track & field heads to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track. The men look to defend its indoor title that was won a season ago.

The meet opens Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the multi-events and concludes day one with the distance medley relay. Sunday also begins with the conclusion of the men's heptathlon and ends with the 4x400-meter relays with the awards ceremony to follow at 4:40 p.m.

Western Carolina currently sits in third in both power rankings, trailing Appalachian State and Samford on both the men's and women's sides which are determined by the top eight times or scores that are reported by the schools for each event that will be conducted at this weekend's championships.

The Catamounts have best times/marks in seven events. On the women's side, freshman Tayla Carter has been sensational for the Catamounts, setting a school record in the 60m dash and is right on the heels of the 200m dash. She has the fastest time in the SoCon in the 60m and the second fastest in the 200m. Genevieve Emrick and Jocelyn Keen each have the fastest time in the 400m and the 800m, respectively. Achsah Brice also sits atop the conference standings in the triple jump.

On the men's side, Jerry Wickerson and Brandon Hairston have the second and third fastest times in the 60m dash while the two flip-flop for the second and third fastest times in the 200m. Junior Aaron Tribble leads the conference in the 400m with his time of 47.81. Bob McNeil will look to compete in both jumps as he is second in the triple and third in the long.

Both men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams are the fastest in the SoCon up to this point.

"We are excited that it is championship time again," said head coach Danny Williamson. "Going into this year's SoCon Indoor Championships, ASU & Samford look to be the favorites on both sides based upon mid-season power rankings and stats from the conference compiled ranking lists. Hopefully we will be able to do some good and exciting things, and by day's end on the final day, have been able to put ourselves in a position to be in contention for the team championships."
