Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina juniors Zeb Johnson and Raquel Ramseur were today honored by the Southern Conference by being named its Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Month for January. Johnson posted three SoCon-leading marks during the month, while Ramseur set a trio of WCU women's seasonal bests.

The duo was honored in the final week of the month as both Johnson and Ramseur were named the SoCon's Indoor Athletes of the Week back on Jan. 31.

Johnson (Charlotte, N.C./Garinger HS) topped the SoCon rankings in three different events during January. He posted then conference-best times in the 60-meter dash (6.80), the 200-meter dash (21.59) and the 400-meters at 49.01. (Teammate Albert Ashcraft currently sits atop the SoCon 60-meter leader board with a school-record time 6.75; Johnson ran his seasonal-best time of 21.55 in the 200-meter dash at Akron).

Johnson kicked off the winter season with a first-place finish in the 200-meters at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 20. He earned a second-place finish with a time of 6.92 in the 60-meters at the Niswonger Invitational on Jan. 27 and was part of WCU's 4x400-meter relay team that finished first at the Niswonger Invitational event with a time of 3:13.07.

Entering this weekend's SoCon Championships, Johnson ranks second in the 60-meter, first in the 200-meter and second in the 400-meter dash events, while also running a leg of Western's league-leading 4x400-meter relay.

Ramseur (Charlotte, N.C./Vance HS) led the Catamounts to a ninth-place finish at the Clemson Invitational on Jan. 20. The junior paced the women's team with a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash and was the first-place collegian in the Niswonger Invitational 400-meter with a time of 55.95 on Jan. 27. Ramseur was also the third-place collegian in the 200-meters with a time of 24.94 and ran a 54.2 split on the second-place 4x400-meter relay team at the same event.

Ramseur currently leads the SoCon rankings in the 200, 400 and 4x400 relay and is ranked third in the 60 meters behind teammate Tangelia Johnson who leads the league.

Western is next in action this Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 17-18) at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Clemson, S.C.
