Boone, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore T. Alford improved his NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 55 meter dash Thursday at the Valentine Indoor Track Meet in Boone, N.C., finishing in second at 6.22 seconds. He ran the race in 6.23 during the preliminaries of the ASU Invitational on Jan. 17. Additionally, Alford ranks 13th nationally in the 60 meter dash with his best time being 6.70.
Head coach Danny Williamson took a few of his track and field athletes to the meet in Boone to help prepare them for the upcoming Clemson Invitational and Southern Conference Championships. Among those who competed were freshman Lawrence Briscoe, who placed seventh in the 55 meter high hurdles with a time of 7.82, and James Irwin, who finished first in the one mile run in a time of 4:23.72.
WCU junior Michelle Velez finished third in the 55 meter high hurdles with a personal best time of 8.30. Alissa Short finished the one mile run in 5:27.20 for fourth place. Whitney Woods and Jerrine Peeler placed second and third, respectively, in the 3,000 meter run with times of 11:07.90 and 11:25.18.
The Catamounts travel to Clemson this weekend for the school's Invitational meet and then prepare for the SoCon Championships, held in Johnson City, Tenn., Feb. 21-22.
