CULLOWHEE, N.C. - For the third straight week, a Western Carolina women's track & field freshman has earned Southern Conference honors. Achsah Brice was named on Tuesday the SoCon Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts at the Tiger Paw Invitational last weekend. The selections are made by the league's track and field coaches.
Last week Brice finished fifth in the triple jump at the Tiger Paw Invitational with a personal-best leap of 39-0.50. Brice's jump was nearly a foot longer than her previous best and leads the SoCon in the event.
Brice - a Greensboro, N.C., native - has earned three top-15 finishes this season and has proven to be a versatile athlete, competing in the 200m, 400m, long jump and triple jump.
On the men's side, junior Aaron Tribble was named an honorable mention SoCon Men's Track Athlete of the Week. Tribble ran an indoor personal-best 48.57 at the Tiger Paw. Prior to Brice tallying the SoCon honor, freshman Tayla Carter had been named January's SoCon Female Track Athlete of the Month and picked up Track Athlete of the Week honors for the week ending on Jan. 24.
Western Carolina was originally scheduled to participate in the ASU Pre-Conference Meet in Boone, but will now not be attending the meet. The Catamounts will now prepare for its next meet, the SoCon Indoor Championships, held at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
