Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina junior Laura Tieszen has been named the Southern Conference's Indoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week. She joins East Tennessee State's James Rainer in receiving the weekly honor.

Tieszen, a Rapid City, S.D., native, finished second in the pole vault at the Meyo Invitational last weekend, which was hosted by Notre Dame. Tieszen cleared a personal best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 12 feet, 11 and one half inches. She additionally competed in the 60 meter hurdles and finished with a personal best time of 9.96.

Earlier this season, Tieszen finished fourth overall in the women's pentathlon at Clemson with a Western Carolina record score of 2,889. She finished as the pole vault champion at the Niswonger Invitational at ETSU with a height of 12-6 after coming in second at the UNC Fast Times at 11-11.75.

This is the first such honor for Tieszen in her career as a Catamount.

Western Carolina heads south Saturday (Feb. 14) to compete in the Clemson Invitational before preparing for the Southern Conference Indoor Championships which are in being held at East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn., Feb. 27-28.
