CULLOWHEE, N.C. -
The Southern Conference announced its January athletes of the month today, highlighting excellence among student-athletes during the month. The athletes of the month are nominated by each member institution and selected by the conference office. Western Carolina sprinter Jane't Carothers was tabbed by the SoCon for female track honors.
Carothers, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., set an indoor personal-best in the 400 meters at the Kentucky Invitational on Jan. 15. Her time of 55.29 in the event is the fastest in the conference this season. Carothers just missed breaking her personal-record two weeks later at the JFR Combined Events Invitational at Clemson when she ran the 400 meters in a time of 55.31, finishing first at the meet. At Clemson, Carothers also ran a 55.0 split on the 4 x 400 meters relay that recorded a SoCon leading 3:48.88. The Catamount sprinter ranked first in the 400 meters, second in the 200 meters, fifth in the 60 meters and is part of a relay team that ranked first in the conference and in the month of January.
This marks the second time this month that Carothers has been selected for an honor by the SoCon. Earlier in the month the senior earned SoCon Athlete of the Week honors.
The Western Carolina track & field team will be back in action this weekend as part of the team will be in Akron, Ohio for the Akron Invitational, and the rest of the team will be in Clemson, S.C. for the Tiger Paw Invitational.
