Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Manteo Mitchell was today honored by the Southern Conference by being named its Men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week. The weekly honor is the second for the Catamount men this season as junior Zeb Johnson received the award a week ago, and the third for WCU overall as junior Raquel Ramseur was recognized last week as well.
Mitchell shared this week's award with Adam Van Nortwick of Appalachian State who finished second in the mile run at Akron after running a personal best 4:07.72.
Mitchell took first place in the 400-meter dash at last weekend's Akron Open in Akron, Ohio. His lap time of 47.98 currently leads the SoCon performance chart. Mitchell also clocked a 6.93 in the 60-meter dash, which ranks third in the league in that event. A native of Charlotte, Mitchell also ran a leg of the men's 4x400-meter relay team which finished second to Ohio State with a time of 3:18.82. Western currently ranks atop the conference 1,600-meter relay leader board with a time 3:13.07 run at the Niswonger Invitational.
Western's track & field teams hit the road for the Tiger Invitational hosted by Clemson University this Friday (Feb. 9) and Saturday (Feb. 10). Also, a few WCU student-athletes will compete at Appalachian Indoor Limited Open on Thursday (Feb. 8), with events starting around 3:30 pm.
