Cullowhee, N.C. -
Western Carolina sophomore Zeb Johnson was today named the Southern Conference's men's Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week by the league office. The award is the first for the Catamount track team this season.
The award was Johnson's second track athlete of the week honor but the first during the indoor season. He was the outdoor track athlete of the week in mid-April last season.
Johnson, the 2005 Outdoor Track Freshman of the Year, finished second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 60-meter dash at the Akron Open last weekend. He recorded a time of 21.60 in the 200-meter event and 6.87 in the shorter dash. Both of his times lead the Southern Conference performance charts in their respective events. Johnson also ran 47.6 on the anchor leg for WCU's second place 4 x 400m relay team at the event.
Western returns to action this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10-11, at the Tiger Classic hosted by Clemson University. The event marks the final tune-up before the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Feb. 24-25, also in Clemson, S.C.
