CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina freshman Tayla Carter was named the Southern Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Month, as announced by the conference office Thursday.

Carter has won three races this season, including opening up the season with victories in the 55m (6.99) and the 300m (40.17) at the Appalachian Invitational. On Jan. 1 at the Niswonger Invitational, the rookie tallied a win in the 60m (7.54). At the McCravy Memorial, Carter tied a seven-year old school record in the 60m, running a 7.48 to match the time of Tangelia Johnson from 2006. On Jan. 11, the Marietta, Ga., native placed third among collegiate runners in the 60m at the Tiger Challenge. The conference leader in the 60m was also named the SoCon's track athlete of the week on Jan. 24.

The Catamounts will be back in action in Clemson, S.C., this weekend for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Over 1,300 athletes will compete at the Clemson Indoor Track & Field Complex on the school's campus.

The Tiger Paw begins at 2:00 p.m. Friday with multiple field events and preliminary rounds of the 60m dash and the 60m hurdles.
