Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Caleb Bailey has been named by the Southern Conference as the Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second week in a row. The Lawrenceville, Ga., native received the honor last week after winning the 800 meter run in two consecutive meets with his fastest time being 1:52.70.

This past weekend at the Niswonger Invitational at ETSU, Bailey finished second in the 800m, dropping his conference leading time by two seconds to 1:50.72. This time is a WCU Indoor school record and 0.20 seconds faster than the current conference record. In the preliminaries, he set the then WCU Indoor school record with a 1:51.67. Bailey also split 48.3 on the 4x400m relay team which finished fifth overall in 3:16.50.

The Catamounts head to Indiana University tomorrow, Feb. 7, to compete in the IU Invitational over the weekend. Immediate results can be found at www.iuhoosiers.com and a release on Western Carolina results will be up on WCU's webpage after the meet.

Bailey and women's basketball standout, Jennifer Gardner, were also named the Arby's/Catamount Student Athletes of the Month for January. Gardner finished the month with 112 points in eight games to average 14.0 ppg for the month. The sophomore forward also averaged 8.8 rpg in January. Gardner posted four straight double-doubles against College of Charleston, East Tennessee, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State. During that span, she recorded a career-high 14 rebounds in back-to-back games against CofC and ETSU. Gardner also posted a career-high 23 points in the win over GSU on 7-of-12 shooting and a perfect 9-of-9 at the line.

Gardner has 153 rebounds on the season to lead the team and rank fourth in the SoCon (7.7/g), and needs just three more to reach 300 for her career. She is also currently averaging 12.4 ppg, good for eighth in the league. She currently leads the conference in field goal percentage at 51.0 percent from the field. In offensive rebounds she's tied for second in the SoCon, pulling down 3.20 per game, and is sixth in defensive rebounds, grabbing 4.45 per contest. In free throw percentage, Gardner is currently in 12th at 76.2 percent (93-122). No SoCon player has been to the line more times than Gardner this year.
