Spartanburg, S.C. - Matt Evans, a senior on the Western Carolina men's track and field team, has been named the Southern Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for February 3.

The Old Fort, N.C., native is majoring in physical education and has a 3.5 GPA.

He set the school record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,034 points and went on to finish second in the event at the Clemson Games. Evans earned first place finishes in the high jump, with a mark of 2.08m, and the shot put, with a distance of 13.47m. He also took second in the long jump and third in the pole vault.

The previous record was 4,776 points, set by Evans at the 2009 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Evans becomes the fourth Catamount to earn a Student-Athlete of the Week honor during the 2009-2010 season. Western Carolina leads the conference with the number of honorees in the weekly prestigious accoloade.
