Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina senior Caleb Bailey has been named the Southern Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week for January 29. The Snellsville, Ga., native receives this honor after finishing as the champion in the 800 meter run in back-to-back meets.

On Jan. 17 in Boone, Bailey came in first with a time of 1:52.70 at the ASU Invitational, just 1.5 seconds short of provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships and 0.03 seconds short of the school record, which he set himself just last year. A week later at the Tar Heel Classic in Chapel Hill, he won the 800 meter with a time of 1:52.72.

Bailey was an All-SoCon performer in indoor and outdoor track in 2002. He was also an All-SoCon performer in cross country for the Catamounts.

The men's and women's track and field teams take off for Johnson City this weekend to compete in the ETSU Invitational. The meet will take place Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
