Asheville, N.C. -
The Southern Conference announced today that Western Carolina's Virginia LaCombe was named the SoCon's Indoor Track & Field female athlete of the week for January 30.
LaCombe, a senior from Lenoir, finished second in high jump at the Blue Heaven Track and Field Rumble at UNC. She cleared 5' 10", which is a NCAA provisional standard. Her mark also breaks the WCU record, which she previously set at 5' 9.75".
LaCombe leads the Southern Conference women's performance list in the high jump and ranks fourth on the triple jump and is top 10 on the hurdles performance lists.
LaCombe is the second WCU athlete to earn the female honors, joining teammate Rosalyn Hood, who garnered the honor in Week One (Jan. 16). Hood won the long jump at Ohio State meet on January 12th. Her distance of 18-7 is the second longest in the conference this season. She also ranks among the conference leaders in the 200 meters.
Darus Cofield earned the Southern Conference SoCon's first male indoor track & field athlete of the week on Jan. 16.
Cofield, a freshman at WCU, won the 200 meters (22.41) and the 400 meters (48.62) at the Ohio State Invitational this past weekend.
The Raleigh, NC, native also anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team. In that race, he received the baton approximately 30 meters behind the Ohio State and Indiana State anchors and proceeded to run them down to give the Catamounts the win.
