Cullowhee, N.C. - Junior Adam Puett crossed the finish line in a track-record 4:11.47 to highlight Western Carolina's showing at the Tiger Twilight Meet held at the Clemson University Indoor Track & Field facility over the weekend.

Puett took first place in the mile run, nearly a full 10-seconds ahead of former Catamount Caleb Bailey, who was running in the event unattached. His time was also just over three seconds faster than the track record of 4:14.56, previously held by Paablo Durana of North Carolina and was the fastest mile for Western this indoor season. Puett also ran a leg of the WCU Distance Medley relay team which recorded a time of 10:46.35 to finish second in the meet.

Other highlights for the men's team included sophomore Jamar Frazier placing third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:01.40. Senior Wes Willoughby soared over a season-best height of 4.56 meters (14'11.50") to place third in the pole vault competition, followed by David McCall and Justin Spormann in sixth and eighth, respectively. Also in the field events, Western swept positions four through eight in the weight throw led by senior Matt Decker with a distance of 15.89m (52'1.75").

In the 60-meter dash, Zeb Johnson was quicker than four University of Alabama runners in the preliminaries in setting the WCU season-best time in the event, but he, along with teammate Michael Malone, who was seventh in the prelims, both recorded false starts in the finals of the event. Senior Darius Bryson was just behind Johnson in the qualifying race in fifth wound up placing sixth in the finals for Western. Johnson also placed eighth in the 200-meter dash with the fastest time of the season for the Catamounts, with senior James Barr taking fourth in the 400-meter race.

On the women's side, Western Carolina tied or set six seasonal bests at Clemson. Sophomore Brittany Whitaker leaped over 1.65m (5'5") to place second in the high jump event, tying her best of the season which she set at the Niswonger Invitational. Also tying a top-season performance was junior Cassie Gentry in the 60-meter dash. She placed seventh in the preliminaries with a time of 7.93, but improved on both her time and position, crossing the stripe fourth with a 7.88 in the finals, two slots ahead of teammate Raquel Ramseur in sixth. Ramseur also set a seasonal-best, recording a 24.96 in the 200-meter dash to place third for the Catamounts.

Senior Laura Tieszen finished in a three-way tie for first in the pole vault competition with a season-best height of 3.80 meters, with Rachel Glasgow finishing sixth in the same event. And two-sport standout Melissa Berry leaped to third in the preliminaries of the women's long jump competition before finishing fourth with a distance of 5.48 meters, one position ahead of teammate NaShay McGriff in fifth. McGriff also placed fifth in the triple jump and ran sixth in the 60-meter hurdles.

Other highlights for the Catamount women's team included defending Southern Conference Performer of the Week Leslie Martin placing sixth in the 400-meter dash, with Deanna Kulesz setting a 2004-05 top time of 5:14.53 in the mile run, good enough for second in the event. Freshman Kerri Savery placed third, just ahead of senior teammate Tonya Edmonds in the 800-meter run with times of 2:18.87 and 2:19.16, respectively. And sophomore Sharhonda Bell placed third in the shot put, with teammate Miranda Long and Jenn Hawkins placing fourth and fifth in the weight throw competitions.
