Spartanburg, S.C. - Western Carolina sophomore Josey Weaver and was named the Southern Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week for all meets January 7-9 as chosen by the league's track and field coaches.
Weaver, who is from Weaverville, N.C., took first place in the 3000m at the Eddie and Jo Smith Jr., Tar Heel Invitational with a time of 8:42.23. He improved his personal-best time by 13 seconds. The Catamounts claimed the men's team title by beating out the University of North Carolina, Appalachian State and Wake Forest at the invitational.
Appalachian State's Malcolm Styers also shared the honor with Weaver after placing first in the weight throw.
The honor was the fifth for a Western Carolina athlete this season. Weaver joins Benny Davis, Alex Dollard, Shalyn McMichael and Tiana Jones in garnering Athlete of the Week accolades.
The Catamounts return to action next weekend, January 22-23, at the East Tennessee State Niswonger Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
