Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina men and women's indoor track and field team return after the holiday break for their second meet of the season on Friday, January 8 at the Eddie and Jo Smith Jr., Tar Heel Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
The five other teams in the meet all hail from the Tar Heel state, including Southern Conference rival Appalachian State. The meet features a top-25 team on the women's side as the UNC women were ranked preseason No. 24 in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) poll released on Tuesday. St. Augustine College enters the meet as the four-time defending NCAA Division II National Champion in men's indoor track. North Carolina Central and Wake Forest round out the field of six teams.
There will be 15 total events, including nine running events and six field events. The meet will allow unlimited entries as no team points will be counted. WCU returns to action after participating in the Appalachian State Invitational on December 5. A combined 15 Catamounts completed top-3 finishes including capturing five individual titles. Western Carolina swept the Southern Conference Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honors as Shalyn McMichael, Tiana Jones, Benny Davis and Alex Dollard all garnered accolades.
"This meet will be good for us to get back out there and face other competition," said Catamounts coach Danny Williamson. "We have been away for almost five weeks. This will be a good starting point for us to get back in-shape and work our way to another conference championship."
