The Western Carolina men's and women's track & field teams combined to post 18 podium finishes including eight first-place performances at the season-opening Appalachian Invitational Saturday at the Holmes Center.
In the head-to-head team competition between Western Carolina and UNC Asheville in the Parkway Series, the Catamount women won 270.5-to-63.5 while the men outscored UNCA 254-to-75 to give WCU two points and a three-point advantage, 5-2, overall.
"For the first meet of the indoor season, I felt we had a pretty good showing overall with several outstanding individual efforts and performances," said head coach Danny Williamson. "Today was a good measuring stick for us and from all indications, I feel that we are further along this season than we were this time a year ago."
Western's women led the way with 12 top three finishes, including seven individual first-place runs. Junior Raquel Ramseur posted a pair of top finishes by winning both the 200- and 400-meter events, setting an ASU track record in the 200. Ramseur's classmate, Tangelia Johnson, ran second in the 200-meter dash and set a WCU school record by winning the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.95. Rounding out the sprints, senior Asia Davis also claimed a first-place finish by winning the 800-meter run while also placing second in the 55-meter hurdles.
Senior Deanna Kulsez and junior Kerrie Savery went one-two in the women's mile run, finishing two seconds apart at 5:13 and 5:15, respectively. Kulesz also claimed the top spot in the 3,000-meter run.
Other top performances for Western's women included Morgan Broadnax finishing fourth in the triple jump, Sharhonda Bell placing fourth in the weight throw, and Brittany Whittaker edging out teammate Angela Stark for fourth and fifth in the high jump competition. Also, two WCU teams finished first and second in the 4x400-meter relay.
On the men's side, WCU track & field newcomer - and two-sport standout,
Albert Ashcraft - running unattached led a Catamount parade as Western claimed five of the top six spots in the 200-meter dash. Junior
Zeb Johnson ran second, followed by
James Gregory and
Manteo Mitchell in fourth with
Dominique Young in sixth. Ashcraft also won the 55-meter dash just edging out Johnson, while Mitchell ran second and Gregory fourth in the 400-meter dash.
Freshman Matt Evans won his first collegiate event in the high jump, clearing 1.93 meters to defeat teammate Anthony Rogers who was competing unattached (second) and Daniel Joseph (fourth). The Catamount men's 4x400-meter relay also finished in the runner-up position.
Other top performances for Western included Mike Malone finishing fourth and Matt Harlfinger placing fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, freshman Jestin Jennings running fourth in the 800-meters. Also competing unattached, senior Tyler Ferguson won the men's triple jump.
Western Carolina returns to action on Jan. 12-13 when it visits Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Invitational.
