Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Track & Field teams concluded the 2004-05 athletic season on Saturday, May 28 at the NCAA East Regional in New York City, N.Y. The men's and women's 4x400-meter relay teams advanced one position in the final regional rankings to conclude the meet.

The final day of competition from Icahn Stadium was marred by nearly a two-hour weather delay which included heavy winds, rain, and steadily dropping temperatures. The stoppage pushed the start of the 4x400-meter relays back, interrupting the warm-ups of the competitors.

The Western Carolina men's 1,600-meter relay team went to the regional with the 16th-best time in the East during the regular season. After the delay, the team of senior James Barr, sophomore James Gregory, junior Charleton Grant, and freshman Zeb Johnson turned in the 15th-best time of the meet from the second section. Their time of 3:12.78 was just over a second and a half slower than their top-time of the season.

The Catamount women also advanced one position in the final East rankings, overcoming adversity to do so. Senior Tonya Edmonds, who ran the lead leg of the four-tiered event, battled back spasms the duration of the trip to New York. Fighting through visible pain, Edmonds competed, passing the baton to freshman Raquel Ramseur mid-pack. The final two on the squad were sophomore Asia Davis, who ran in the women's 400-meter hurdles on Friday, and senior Jennifer Spivey. The foursome turned in a time of 3:48.60, eight and a half seconds slower than the school record time set in mid-May.

Also in competition for the Cats on Saturday were Southern Conference champions junior Wes Willoughby in the men's pole vault and sophomore Brittany Whitaker in the women's high jump. Neither could record a height, failing at the opening height. Willoughby's opening height would have been a personal best, while Whitaker's beginning leap would have equaled her SoCon winning, and seasonal best.
