JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Tyrie Adams and junior Hailey Cook were the final two Catamounts in action Saturday for the Western Carolina track & field program at the 2016 NCAA East Preliminary in Jacksonville, Fla. Adams competed in the men’s high jump while Cook represented WCU in the women’s shot put. Both needed to finish inside the top-12 to advance to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA finals.
Cook was the first to compete and she came up just under two feet short from moving on to the finals as she once again broke her own school record with a toss of 15.57m (51-01.00). The final qualifier in the event was Aliyah Gustafson of Bowling Green who put up a mark of 16.17m (53-00.75).
Adams, who was competing in his first ever NCAA competition, failed to clear a height as the competition began at 2.03m (6-08.00). Adams was one of nine competitors not to register a height Saturday afternoon.
Cook and Adams close out WCU’s season and will look forward returning to the NCAA East Preliminary next season.
