New York - Three Western Carolina track & field individuals and one team improved upon their ranking Friday at the NCAA East Regional on Randall's Island in New York.
Freshman David Bowles moved from 19th to 12th in men's javelin with his throw of 197-0 (60.04-meters). Out of the individuals who finished in front of him, only one was an underclassman. In the men's 1,500-meter run, junior Adam Puett came into the regional ranked 27th in the region, but finished out the day ranked 14th with his time of 3:50.27, a mere two seconds off his seasonal best.
Mike Malone ran 10.74 in the men's 100-meter dash, three-tenths of a second slower than his SoCon Championship mark of 10.45.
The Western men's 4x100-meter relay team improved on its pre-regional 16th ranking, moving to 11th by running 40.63, which is the second-best time in WCU history. The team of Zeb Johnson, Malone, Darius Bryson, and James Gregory had a near miscue on the second exchange, but still managed the season-best mark.
For the Catamount women, sophomore Asia Davis finished tied for 10th in the 400-meter hurdles, improving on her entering rank of 11th. She turned in the 3rd best time in WCU history on Friday, running 59.32. Including today, Davis currently holds the top three WCU times set earlier this season.
Senior Laura Tieszen finished in a three-way tie for 11th in the women's pole vault with a height of 12-6.
Competition at the NCAA East Regional concludes on Saturday at Manhattan College's Icahn Stadium. Western will have 10 student-athletes in action on the final day. Scheduled to run for the men are James Barr, James Gregory, Charleton Grant, and Zeb Johnson. The women's team will consist of Tonya Edmonds, Raquel Ramseur, Asia Davis, and Jennifer Spivey.
