NCAA East Regional Schedule of Events

Gainesville, Fla. - The Western Carolina men's 4x100-meter relay team posted a season-best time on Friday evening at the NCAA East Regional to qualify for Saturday's final at the Percy Beard Track highlighting the Catamounts' first day performances. The team of sophomore Manteo Mitchell, junior Zeb Johnson, freshman Dominique Young and sophomore Kevin Johnson passed the baton in 40.10 to place sixth overall with the top eight advancing to the finals.

Individually, Mitchell just missed qualifying for the finals in the men's 400-meter dash by finishing 11th with the top eighth advancing. However, his hot lap time of 47.06 may put him into a position for an at-large bid to the NCAA National Championship in Sacramento, Calif.

Rounding out the individual performances for WCU's men were Young, who ran 22nd in the 200-meter dash and 25th in the 100-meter event at his first-ever collegiate regional event. Senior Mike Malone finished 19th in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 52.55.

In addition to running in the 400-meter relay finals on Saturday, the Catamount men will also run in the third of three sections of the 4x400-meter relay. Western's 1,600-meter relay team of Mitchell, Malone, Zeb Johnson and senior James Gregory entered the regional event with the school's highest regional ranking at fifth overall after running a time of 3:08.34 at the Georgia Tech Invitational (May 12).

Also, the lone field competitor from WCU - freshman Matt Evans - will compete in the high jump finals on the last day of the regional meet. The Old Fort, N.C., native ranked 18th overall in the region entering the meet.

On the women's side Friday, both junior Raquel Ramseur and senior Asia Davis posted 13th-place finishes in the 400-meter dash and 400-meter hurdle events, respectively. Ramseur turned in a time of 54.23, while Davis manipulated the hurdles in 1:00.46. Junior Kerrie Savery recorded a time of 2:14.15 in the 800-meter run to finish 22nd overall in the event which equaled her ranking entering the event.

Ramseur teamed with freshman Sherelle Froneberger and classmates Tangelia Johnson and Melissa Berry to finish 12th with a time of 45.97, advancing five spots from its previous regional rank.

Action continues from Florida at 1:00 pm on Saturday with the men's high jump finals, with the 4x100-meter relay finals in the starting blocks at 5:30 pm.
