JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Senior Jamie Van Pelt broke his own school record in the hammer Friday morning in the NCAA East Preliminary Round to place 22nd overall in the event. Having to place in the top 12 to move on to the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Van Pelt concluded his final season in the Purple and Gold at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.
Van Pelt finished tops in his flight with his record throw of 59.89m (196-6) besting his throw of 58.84m (193-0) that he threw to win the event at the Southern Conference Championship. He was seventh overall after the first two flights had concluded with just one flight to go before the finals round. The top-16 overall marks made the finals round. Van Pelt fell 15 spots once the final flight threw, thus eliminating him from the competition.
Van Pelt finishes his career having won the SoCon Championship in the hammer this season in outdoors while placing second in the discus. He earned a top-10 finish in the shot put. He also picked up a SoCon Championship win back in 2009 in the discus. Van Pelt also led Western Carolina in the discus, the javelin and had the second best throw in the shot put.
The Tampa, Fla., native was equally as accomplished in the classroom graduating from Western Carolina with Cum Laude Honors as a political science major.
