Cullowhee, N.C. - Freshman David Bowles, the Southern Conference champion in men's javelin, set a Western Carolina record on Saturday in the same event to highlight the Catamounts' performance at the Clemson Orange & Purple Classic.

Bowles throw of 62.91-meters (206-ft., 5-in.) placed him third in the standings at the meet, but he was the top collegiate athlete competing. His mark broke junior teammate Josh Lee's record (199-ft., 10-in.) by over six and a half feet. Although he had already qualified for the regional by virtue of his individual championship at the SoCon meet, Bowles toss at Clemson surpassed the minimum qualifying mark by nearly one and a half meters.

Other Catamounts trying to reach the regional marks included freshman sprinter Tangelia Johnson, who ran in both the women's 100 and 200-meter dash events over the weekend. The Charlotte, N.C., native placed tied for fourth in the 100-meter race with a time of 12.25, half a second off the regional mark. She crossed the stripe in sixth in the 200-meter with a time of 24.80, her quickest time of the outdoor season.

Junior Lawrence Briscoe, who leads the Catamount men's times in the 110-meter hurdles, navigated the barriers in 14.52 over the weekend, just missing both his top time and regional qualifying mark.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Zeb Johnson, Mike Malone, Darius Bryson, and James Gregory placed second at the Classic, passing the baton in 41.55, which was a shade slower than their SoCon championship and seasonal best run of 40.78.

In the field events, freshman Chris Lewis continued his search of the qualifying mark, placing third in the men's shot put with a WCU season-best showing of 15.49-meters. He was just over a full meter short of the qualifying standard. He placed seventh in the men's hammer throw with a distance of 47.56-meters, four positions and five meters behind teammate Jason Stepp who finished third. Stepp just missed eclipsing his seasonal best.

Western will travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational for the final regional qualifying opportunity before the mandatory rest week prior to the NCAA East Regional. To date, the Catamounts have 15 individuals that have qualified for the May 27-28 regional to be held at Randall's Island, N.Y.
