Boone, N.C. - Appalachian State's men came back from a 37-point margin with six events to go to win by 17 points over second-place Western Carolina at the 2004 Southern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Lady Catamounts took home a fourth place finish behind App State, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga.

Western Carolina's Milton Bolton claimed the 400 meter dash title with a time of 46.68 seconds. That was the fastest performance by a SoCon performer since VMI's Mario Small set the record of 45.77 in 1991. T. Alford of won the 100-meter dash for the Cats with a time of 10.41 seconds which was also the fastest time by a SoCon runner since 1991.

Bobby Robinson finished in a strong second in the men's decathlon with 5621 points, while Tyler Ferguson won the triple jump with a distance of 48-7.5. Adam Puett crossed the finish line first in the men's 1500 meter run with a time of 3:53.59 and Lawrence Briscoe won the 110 meter hurdles, coming in at 14.39.

Laura Tieszen, who set a SoCon record in the pole vault and finished second in the javelin, won Field Most Outstanding Performer acclaim. Leslie Martin of WCU took the 800m with a clocking of 2:11.94. Also for the women, freshman Brittany Whitaker took home medalist honors in the high jump with a regional qualifying leap of 5-8.5.
