Davidson, N.C. - It was a successful day for Western Carolina at the Irwin Belk Invitational, hosted by Davidson College this weekend. Two WCU records were broken and two NCAA Regional qualifying times were set as the Catamount men's and women's track and field teams looked to improve their marks as the teams head to the Southern Conference Championships next week.

Josh Lee topped the competition and set a new school record in the men's javelin with a toss of 199-10. Also setting a Catamount record was the men's 4x100 meter relay team of Patrick Mauldin, Darius Bryson, Milton Bolton and T. Alford. The group finished second overall with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 40.61. Bolton additionally qualified regionally in the men's 400 meter dash, coming in first with a time of 47.15.

Also coming in first for the Cats was Adam Puett in the men's 1500 meters with a time of 3:58.05 and Lawrence Briscoe in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.56. Jason Stepp came out a winner in the hammer throw with a distance of 151-8.

For the women, Asia Davis finished as the champion in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 61.92, which was a new meet record. Laura Tieszen once again captured first place in the women's pole vault, clearing 12-3.5.

Western now begins a week of preparations for the 2004 SoCon Outdoor Championships, which will once again be held in Boone, N.C., on the campus of Appalachian State. The meet is set to take place May 1-2.
