Lexington, Va. - The Western Carolina men's and women's track and field team is fourth after the first day of the Southern Conference Tournament being held at Read Track on the campus of VMI. In the first day of competition the men and women ran the 10,000 meter run and the heptathlon.

Junior Virginia LaCombe, the defending Southern Conference heptathlon champion, is second with 2937 points. Junior Jared Maliska is also second with 3225 points.

Sophomore Melanie Cooper placed eighth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 40:35.95. On the men's side, sophomore Jesse Norman also placed eighth with a time of 32:27.32.

The women's heptathlon concludes on Friday with the long jump, javelin and 800 meters while the men's will also finish on Friday with the staging of the 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters.
