WCU Track & Field Finishes First in Several Events at NC vs SC Invitational

Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina track and field team had an outstanding weekend at the North versus South Carolina All-Star Meet in Clemson Saturday, taking home many first place and top five finishes.

In the women's events, Western took the second through fourth spots in the 800 meter run with Megan Thacker finishing second at 2:14.36. Vanita Carlson finished third in the 1,500 meter run at 5:02.17. Ronetta Burgess finished second in the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of 14.41. The 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams both came in third at 47.12 and 3:50.91 respectively. Virginia LaCombe captured first place in the high jump at 5' 7", with Altavise Franklin coming in third at 5' 3".

The Lady Catamounts took four of the top six spots in the pole vault with freshman Laura Tieszen placing second with a vault of 12' 3.5". Rosalyn Hood placed second in the long jump at 17' 11.5", while Cedea Bowden came in second in the triple jump at 37' 6.5". In the shot put, Western claimed all of the top five spots with Altavise Franklin taking the gold with a throw of 40' 11.75". Kiley Wright finished first in the discus throw at 130' 1", while Kineta Williams took first in the hammer throw at 140' 2". In the javelin throw, the Lady Cats claimed the top second through sixth spots with Kineta Williams coming in second at 116' 6".

In the men's events, James Rainer finished in third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.83. In the 400, Western placed in the third and fourth spots with Milton Bolton leading the Cats at 47.66. Michael Simmons placed second in the 800 meter run at 1:56.24 with Eddie Vick coming in behind him in fourth at 1:58.35. Caleb Bailey and James Irwin finished fourth and fifth in the 1,500 meter run at 3:57.83 and 4:04.17 respectively.

Western's 4x100 meter relay team came in third with a time of 41.17. Charles Rice claimed the top spot in the pole vault at 15' 9.25" with Seajae Hartness coming in third at 15' 3.5". Phillip Johnson come in second in the discus with a throw of 157' 10". And Western claimed the top two spots in the javelin throw with Eric Wimpey coming in first at 178' 11".

 

 

The Catamounts now begin preparations for the Southern Conference Tournament, which begins on Thursday, April 18, and runs through Saturday. The team has a good chance of claiming first place in the conference as they stand in second currently with 137 points as of the SoCon April 4 release. Appalachian State stands in front of Western with 183 points.
