Charlotte, N.C. - Western Carolina's Michelle Velez finished the women's 100 meter hurdles with a qualifying time of 14.08 at the UNC Charlotte Invitational Saturday. She is now qualified for the NCAA Regionals, which will be held in Fairfax, Va., on May 30.
For the men, Patrick Mauldin finished as the champion in the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.88. Coming in right behind him in second was Darius Bryson at 22.05. Milton Bolton led WCU in the 100 meter dash, coming in at 10.85 for fifth place. In the 400, John Robertson finished seventh in 48.84, while Caleb Bailey came in third in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:51.81. Lawrence Briscoe led the Cats in the 110 meter hurdles in fourth place with a time of 14.73 as well as in the 400 meter hurdles, coming in at 55.38 for seventh place. The men's 4x100 meter relay team finished third with a combined time of 41.36.
In the men's field events, David McCall came in seventh in the pole vault with a vault of 4.30m. Justin Davis placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 6.63m. In the shot put, Jeb Hall finished fifth with a throw of 14.52m, while Jason Stepp came in seventh in the discus with a throw of 41.14m. Stepp also came in sixth in the hammer throw at 46.92m and Bobby Robinson threw the javelin 40.80m to come in eighth.
Leading the way for the women was Shameka Harris who finished fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.44 and 10th in the 200 meter dash, coming in at 25.77. Leslie Martin placed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:12.34 and Velez came in second in the 400 meter hurdles at 1:01.95. The women's 4x100 meter relay team finished in 47.46, good for fourth place.
In the women's field events, Velez led the Cats in the pole vault, tying for fourth with a vault of 3.51m. In the shot put,
Kineta Rogers finished third with a throw of 12.13m. She also came in seventh in the discus at 38.43m and sixth in the hammer throw with a distance of 46.67m.
The Catamounts are now in preparation for the Southern Conference Championships, which will take place April 18 in Boone, N.C.
