AUBURN, Ala. - The Western Carolina men’s and women’s track & field teams opened up competition at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University Friday afternoon. The Catamounts competed in a total of eight events with freshman Liam Brooks leading the way with a top-10 finish in the men’s 5,000m.
Brooks turned in the top performance of the day as he finished ninth in the men’s 5,000m with a career best time of 14:46.19. Freshman Joel Freeman finished 38th in the event with a time of 15:39.41.
Sophomore Laney Browder turned in a season best performance in the women’s 5,000m after crossing the line in 18:12.65 while sophomore Katarina Ruehl came in 24th with a time of 18:45.26. The final two Catamounts in the race were senior Kaitlyn Shetler and freshman Emma Hand who finished 26th and 27th, respectively. Shetler turned in a time of 18:57.07 while Hand clocked in at 19:03.62.
Freshman Alanna Johnson picked up a 15th place finish in the women’s triple jump after dropping down at 11.53m (37-10.00) which topped her season best by over a foot. Junior Tiffani Lewis finish six spots back in 21st with a distance of 11.16m (36-07.50). Sophomore Kevin Hires put up a mark of 13.00m (42-08.00) in the men’s triple jump which earned him a 22nd place finish.
Senior Jared Johnson finished 16th in the men’s hammer with a season-best toss of 53.23m (174-08) in a highly competitive field. Junior Scott Peretin finished five spots back in 21st with a distance of 47.16m (154-09).
Sophomore Anne Bennett took 18th in the women’s javelin after stopping the tape at 31.15m (102-02) while senior Dustin Triplett finished 21st in the men’s javelin after posting a toss of 45.48m (149-02).
Junior Hailey Cook put up a season best performance in the women’s hammer with a distance of 46.95m (154-00) which earned her a 25th place finish.
