Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina track & field teams finished sixth (women) and seventh (men) at the 2005 Clemson Invitational held Saturday afternoon at the Rock Norman Track & Field complex.

The women's event was won by the Georgia Bulldogs, followed by rival Georgia Tech in second, and the host Clemson Tigers in third. The men's team competition was taken by Clemson, with Georgia and Alabama running second and third.

Highlighting the day for Western Carolina's women was the performance of sophomore Asia Davis. After entering the weekend ranked 17th nationally in the 400-meter hurdles, the sophomore placed second-place finish in the event with a time of 1:01.31. Davis was also a member of the WCU 4x400-meter relay team that won the event with a mark of 3:43.60, a school record time that is a mere second and a half off the NCAA Regional time. The team consisted of senior Leslie Martin, freshman Raquel Ramseur, Davis, and senior Jennifer Spivey.

Two-sport standouts, freshman Jessika Johnson and Melissa Berry also had good performances for the Cats on Saturday. Johnson set a season-best in the women's high jump, clearing 1.65-meters to place fifth among the competitive field, while Berry set a personal-best in the long jump, leaping 5.25 meters, just missing the top 10. Berry also ran a personal best in the 200-meter dash (25.32).

In other women's field events, NaShay McGriff finished ninth in the triple jump, setting a WCU season best with her jump of 11.33-meters. Cherokee's Miranda Long placed seventh in the discus throw with a top distance this season of 41.29 meters. She was followed by teammate Nicole Lopez in ninth.

On the track, Ramseur added to her top 10 performances with sixth-place showing in the 400-meter dash, crossing the stripe in 56.21. In the same event, Spivey placed eighth with her season-best time of 56.99. In the 800-meter, freshman Kerri Savery posted a collegiate career-best time of 2:17.15 to place fourth.

For the men, Mike Malone placed sixth in the 100-meter dash, tripping the line in 10.88, a season best for the Catamounts this season. He also ran a season top time in the 110-meter hurdles, placing eighth with teammates Ashton Bennett and Matt Harlfinger running 11th and 12th, respectively, while both breaking the previous season best.. In the 100-meter dash, Malone was followed by teammate Darius Bryson in 10th with his seasonal best time of 10.97.

Western also set a top time in the 200-meter dash as James Barr placed eighth at 21.92, half a second quicker than the previous season best. WCU's SoCon-leading 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Zeb Johnson, Malone, Bryson and sophomore James Gregory placed third with a time of 40.80, with the 4x400-meter relay team of Barr, Gregory, Charleton Grant, and Johnson finished fourth, but set a season-best time by nearly six full seconds at 3:11.53. Additionally, Johnson ran fifth at the 400-meter distance, continuing the top-time setting trend with his 47.63 mark. Gregory placed ninth in the same event with a time of 48.52.

On the field, David Bowles placed third in the men's javelin throw with a season-best 59.54-meter effort. Bobby Robinson broke his own seasonal best in the high jump, clearing 1.90-meters to place seventh. Senior Wes Willoughby flew over 4.5-meters in the pole vault to claim 10th place while setting a season best in the process.

In the throws, freshman Chris Lewis hurled the shot a season-best 14.70 meters to secure a sixth place finish in a competition that saw three hurlers qualify for regionals. Likewise was the case for Jason Stepp, who witness four qualify for the NCAA's in the discus throw. Stepp established a new mark for the season with his distance of 44.76 meters. He additionally placed eighth in the hammer throw.

Western's track & field teams will return to competition next weekend in split squad action. Team members will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Sea Ray Relays April 15-16, while others will venture back to Clemson on Saturday.
