Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina's track & field teams bring home 11 victories and 17 podium finishes to help bring home the victory for the Mountains squad on Saturday afternoon in Cullowhee. Western Carolina also had four qualifiers for the NCAA regional in the event.
In the first annual Mountains vs. Beaches event the Mountains team won overall in the men's and women's divisions respectively. The Mountains consisted of Western Carolina & Appalachian State versus the Beaches team of East Carolina & UNC Wilmington.
The Catamount got started early in the men's Hammer Throw event with Cale McDaniel taking home a second place finish with a 50.79 meter throw.
In the men's Shot Put event Ryan Pless finished in third place throwing 15.04 meters. Pless finished with a 49-4.25 feet on his best throw.
Freshman Jamie Van Pelt won his second first place in the Discus Throw for the season with a 45.05-meter throw.
Also on the men's squad Thomas Funderburk placed third in the Long Jump event jumping 22-7.75 feet placing just ahead of teammate junior Alex Dollard. Dollard finished in fourth place jumping 22-7.25 feet.
Daniel Joseph took home first place honors in the men's Triple Jump event with his best jump at 14.39 meters. Dollard finished in second place in the event for the Catamounts.
Sophomore standout Matt Evans had another terrific performance in the men's High Jump event taking home first place honors. Evans jumped 2.10 meters, which qualifies him for the NCAA regional. Evans attempted the Western Carolina complex record at 2.15 meters but fell just short of the mark.
Junior Dominique Young finished in third place in the men's 100-meter dash with a time of 10.55 seconds. With that time Young qualified himself for the NCAA regional.
Senior Manteo Mitchell continues his terrific performance in the 200-meter dash event placing first with a time of 20.73 seconds. Mitchell is now the new record holder for the 200-meter dash breaking Catamount Zeb Johnson's record from last year at 20.78 seconds. Teammate Kevin Johnson also qualified for the NCAA regional with a time of 21.26 seconds.
In the men's 400-meter dash freshman Benny Davis took home a first place finish with a time of 47.61 seconds. Davis has now won the 400-meter dash in his last two meets after winning last week's 400-meter dash at Winthrop.
In the men's 800-meter run Drew Tucker took home a third place finish with a time of 1:55.64.
In the men's 3000-meter run Stephen Hammond placed in third place with a time of 9:08.84.
In the men's 400-meter hurdles Jestin Jennings finished in third place with a time of 54.54 falling just short of the first place time of 53.07.
On the women's side Megan Isaacs started things off with a second place finish in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:41.93. Jordan Gaddy also placed third in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:48.75.
In the women's High Jump event the Catamounts placed third thanks to Janet Carothers jumping 5-03.00 feet. Carothers tied for third with Appalachian State's Rebecca Hazeltine.
In the women's Jump Triple event Jettana Thomas placed third with a 11.06 meters on her best jump.
In the women's 100-meter dash Felicia Paulding took first place with a time of 11.85 seconds. Teammate Emma Bowers placed second with a time of 12.14 seconds.
Janet Carothers takes home a first place finish in the women's 200-meter dash with a time of 24.29 seconds. Teammate Emma Bowers finished in second place with a time of 24.69 seconds earning second podium finish of the day.
In the 400-meter hurdles event Morgan Joseph placed third for the Catamounts with a time of 1:05.47.
In the women's 400-meter dash Shalyn McMichael finished in first place with a time of 55.50 seconds. Teammate Felisha Garren finished in third with a time of 56.36 seconds.
In the 4x100-meter relays, Western Carolina swept the competition winning both on the men's and women's teams. The men's team of Manteo Mitchell, Kevin Johnson, Dominique Young, and Benny Davis finished with a time of 40.24 seconds qualifying them for the NCAA regional.
Western Carolina women's 4x100-meter relay team qualified for the NCAA regional with a time of 45.69 seconds. The team was consisted of Janet Carothers, Felicia Paulding, Emma Bowers, and Aneesha Lane.
In the women's 4x400-meter relay Western Carolina took home first place with a time of 3:48.15 and the Catamounts "B" team finished in second place with a time of 3:53.02.
In the men's 4x400-meter relay Western Carolina broke last year's record in the event with a time of 3:12.73. The team of Thomas Funderburk, Benny Davis, Manteo Mitchell, and Dominique Young qualified for the NCAA regional with their finish.
In the women's 3000-meter Steeplechase event Leach Nicholson finished in second place with a time of 12:06.36.
Western Carolina returns next weekend to participate in the Sea Ray Relays hosted by Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
