Gainesville, Fla. - The Western Carolina men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Florida Relays over the weekend in Gainesville, Fla., on the campus of the University of Florida.

The women had five individuals and two relay teams finish in the top 10 at the meet. Melanie Cooper placed 10th in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:53.73. Alissa Short finished ninth in the 3000 meter steeplechase, coming in at 12:07.93. Michelle Velez vaulted her way into a tie for fifth in the pole vault at 11'4.25". In the shot put, Kineta Rogers came in second with a throw of 43'7.75" and she finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 121'10". In the hammer throw, Quiletta Dunston placed second with a throw of 151'5" and Rogers finished in third at 143'7".

The women's 4x1500 meter relay team of Cooper, Tonya Edmonds, Deanna Kulesz and Short finished seventh, coming in at 19:54.87. The women's 1600 meter sprint medley team of Benetta Boyd, Cassie Gentry, Ashelyn Little and Leslie Martin placed sixth with a time of 4:02.56.

For the men, Ben Watkins placed ninth in the 3000 meter steeplechase, coming in at 9:41.92. The men's 4x1500 meter relay team of Eddie Vick, John Robertson, Adam Puett and James Irwin came in seventh in 16:29.44 and the 1600 meter sprint medley team of T. Alford, Milton Bolton, Patrick Mauldin and Robertson finished ninth with a combined time of 3:27.10.
