Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina track & field teams opened its 2005 outdoor season with a pair of first-place finishes and two regional qualifiers at the Charlotte Invitational held this past weekend at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of UNC Charlotte.

Senior Laura Tieszen picked up where she left off from the indoor season, soaring over a NCAA Regional-qualifying height of 3.80m (12-5.50) to take first place in the pole vault competition. Her vault was nearly a full foot higher than the second-place finisher.

Also qualifying for regionals in the opener was sophomore Asia Davis, who cleared the 400-meter hurdle course in 1:01.73 to place fifth in the event. Yet, it was her preliminary round time of 1:00.57 which made her eligible both for the event finals and the NCAA Regional.

Western Carolina's other first-place finish came from junior Adam Puett who won the men's 5,000-meter event with a time of 14:47.09, three seconds in front of the second place finisher.

For the Catamount women, freshman Raquel Ramseur and senior Leslie Martin each recorded second place finishes. Ramseur was the runner-up in the 400-meter dash, while Martin was second in the 800-meter event which saw a total of four WCU runners place in the top 10. Junior Deanna Kulesz was one of the aforementioned four in the 800-meters, while also placing third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.45.

On the men's side, senior Jason Stepp tallied a trio of top 10 finishes in three field events, finishing eighth in the hammer throw, ninth in the discus, and tenth in shot put. Freshman David Bowles placed fourth in the javelin with a distance of 56.35 meters, two spots ahead of two-sport standout Josh Lee in sixth (53.73m).

Western Carolina returns to action this weekend as it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Florida Relays. On Saturday, April 2, the track & field teams will host its first outdoor track meet on the new facilities in Cullowhee.
