Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Western Carolina men and women's outdoor track and field team completed day one of the Shamrock Invitational hosted by Coastal Carolina University on Friday. WCU had 12 top-10 finishes in their first outdoor competition of the season.
The Catamounts claimed five of the 12 top-10 finishes in distance events on Friday.
Sophomore Josey Weaver claimed first in the men's 10,000 meter run by four seconds in Friday afternoon's final. The Weaverville, N.C. native ran the event in 31:40.88 minutes. On the women's side, Lindsay Groce notched a second place finish with a time of 38:21.12 in the 10,000 meter run.
In the men's 5,000 meter run, Stephen Hammond placed fourth with 14:58.55 minutes and Nolan Clark notched an eighth-place mark with a run of 15:19.10. Olivia Jacobs also ran the 5,000 meter run in 18:12.27 for a fifth place finish.
The Catamount men took home the 4x200 meter relay title with a mark of 1:25.00. The `B' team was comprised of Willie Bowman, Jestin Jennings, Lawren Willard and Alex Dollard. The women's 4x200 meter relay `B' team (Emma Bowers, Hannah Bowers, Shalyn McMichael, Valerie Parks) placed ninth with a run of 1:41.09.
The Western Carolina `A' team (Jennings, Drew Tucker
, Garrett West
and Stephon Roach) finished tenth in the 4x800 relay in 8:07.18. On the women's side, Bowers, Jordan Gaddy
, Danielle Shaurette
and Morgan Turner
placed seventh in the event with a mark of 9:20.72.
Western Carolina also finished strong in the field events as Matt Evans placed fourth in the javelin throw. Evans, a senior from Old Fort, N.C., threw the javelin for a distance of 63.51 meters. Darren Dotson finished sixth in the event with a throw of 61.77 meters.
Zakiyyah Stewart led WCU in the women's hammer throw with a distance of 48.15 meters for 10th place. Quincy Marshall placed 14th in the men's hammer at 48.25 meters. Ashley Wala (3.20 meters, 11th in the pole vault) and Jane't Carothers (1.55m, 15th in the high jump) were WCU's top finishers in their respective events.
