Johnson City, Tenn. - Western Carolina claimed its first SoCon Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship since 1999 on Sunday while WCU's women's team placed fourth at the meet held at East Tennessee State's Memorial Center.

The Catamounts edged two-time defending men's champions Appalachian State by 21 points. However, the Mountaineers did claim the women's title.

Taking home titles for Western Carolina was Lawrence Briscoe who jumped 6-6.75 (2.00 meters) to claim the men's high jump title. In the 60-meter hurdles, Briscoe was victorious (8:26), earning his second individual title of the day. The Catamounts engineered a sweep of the 400-meter race as Milton Bolton edged out James Gregory and James Barr with a time of 48.01. The 4x400-meter relay was won by Western Carolina with a time of 3:14.61. Wes Willoughby claimed the victory in the pole vault, clearing 15-1 (4.60m) and Justin Davis won the long jump with a distance of 24-3.75 (7.41m).

Gregory was honored as the Freshman of the Year, while WCU head coach Danny Williamson was voted the Men's Indoor Coach of the Year by his peers.

On the women's side, the 4x400-meter Catamount relay team placed first (3:47.59). Also setting a SoCon indoor championship record and earning an NCAA provisional qualification in the pole vault was Western Carolina's Laura Tieszen who cleared 12-11.5 (3.95m) for the second time this season.

The following Lady Catamounts made the women's All-Conference team for their respective events: Leslie Martin (3rd, 400m/1st, 4x400mr/3rd, DMR), Jennifer Spivey (1st, 4x400mr/3rd, DMR), Deanna Kulesz (3rd DMR), Melanie Cooper (3rd, DMR), Tonya Edmonds (1st, 4x400mr), Asia Davis (1st, 4x400mr), Brittany Whitaker (3rd-t, HJ), Laura Tieszen (1st, PV) and Shameka Harris (3rd, LJ).

 

 

On the men's side, the following also made the All-SoCon team: T. Alford (2nd, 60m/2nd, 200m), Milton Bolton (1st, 400m/1st, 4x400mr), James Barr (2nd-t, 400m/1st, 4x400mr), James Gregory (2nd-t, 400m/1st, 4x400mr), Adam Puett (3rd, mile/3rd, 3000m), Lawrence Briscoe (1st, 60mh/1st, HJ), Michael Malone (3rd/60mh), Charleton Grant (1st, 4x400mr), Wes Willoughby (1st, PV), Justin Davis (1st, LJ/3rd, TJ), Tyler Ferguson (2nd, LJ/2nd, TJ), Matt Decker (3rd, WT), Bobby Robinson (2nd, Hept.)
