Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Track & Field teams combined to record 28 podium performances, seven of which were first-place finishes, en route to finishing second on both sides at the 2005 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held this weekend at the Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Catamount men were edged by Appalachian State by a mere seven points, followed by Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, and UNC Greensboro rounding out the top five. Western's women were runners-up to the Mountaineers as well, trailing in the final standings by a 9.33 point differential. Georgia Southern placed third, followed by Chattanooga and East Tennessee State in fifth. In all, the Catamount teams were only 16.33 points shy of winning the conference.
Western Carolina did, however, take home some hardware. Catamount head coach Danny Williamson earned his fourth SoCon Men's Indoor Coach of the Year honor, tabbed so by his fellow coaches at the meet. Williamson has tallied a total of 18 coach of the year honors overall during his tenure at WCU. On the women's side, senior Laura Tieszen was named the 2005 SoCon Field Performer of the Year, with Raquel Ramseur garnering the Freshman of the Year honors by the conference.
Tieszen won the indoor pentathlon on the first day of the meet, finishing it off by taking the top prize pole vault competition, an event in which she has already reached the NCAA provisional qualifying height. The Rapid City, S.D., native also tied for fourth in the high jump competition helping the Cats take four of the top five finishing positions on Saturday.
Ramseur, who paced the SoCon's power rankings in a pair of events during the regular season, recorded a pair of top three finishes on the weekend, placing second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 200-meter event. The frosh was also the second leg of Western's 4x400-meter relay team that set a SoCon Indoor record en route to winning the competition. The team of Ramseur, Leslie Martin, Asia Davis, and Jennifer Spivey combined for a time of 3:46.40. Additionally, Ramseur crossed the line seventh in the 60-meter dash.
In addition to her leg of the 1,600-meter long relay event, Martin led the women's distance medley relay team of Tonya Edmonds, Kerrie Savery, and Deanna Kulesz to the individual crown with a time of 12:13.55. Martin tallied her third first-place finish of the meet by turning in the fastest time in the 800-meter run.
On the men's side, juniors Lawrence Briscoe and Adam Puett captured the two first-place finishes for the Catamounts on the weekend. Briscoe blistered the course, successfully defending his crown in the 60-meter hurdle event with a SoCon record time of 8.20. Teammate Mike Malone followed in second, manipulating the hurdles with a time of 8.33, followed in fourth by sophomore Matt Harlfinger. Puett outran the competition to take first in the mile run, logging a time of 4:13.38.
The key over the weekend for Western's men was tight grouping of finishers in the top half of events. Such was the case in the 200-meter dash where the Cats placed four in the top five, ranging from Malone in second through Darius Bryson in fifth. The same is true for the 400-meter dash where freshman Zeb Johnson placed second, followed by James Barr in third and James Gregory in fourth. Barr, Gregory, and Johnson joined teammate Charleton Grant to also place second in the 4x400-meter relay race.
In the field events, Western received second-place points from Briscoe in the high jump, junior Lamont Reid in the long jump, and senior Jason Stepp in the weight throw competition. Classmate Matt Decker followed Stepp in third, with football-standout Calvin Guinyard finishing third in the triple jump, leaping to a distance of 13.93m.
