Western Carolina Women Place First, Men Second in Socon Indoor Championships

2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship Results
Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina women's track and field team used a strong day two to claim their sixth team title, while the men finished in second at the 2010 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held at Clemson University. The Catamount women edged rival Appalachian State 174.5 to 122 points to claim their second title in the three years. The men fell just two points shy, 209-207, as the Mountaineers took home the team championship. Coach Danny Williamson was named the Men's Co-Coach of the Year along with Samford's Rod Tiffin. Williamson was also named the Southern Conference Women's Coach of the Year. In total, Williamson has collected nine Coach of the Year honors on the women's side and eight for the men in indoor track and field competition. Four Catamounts earned individual award honors as Cordell Livingston was voted the league's Most Outstanding Athlete and Freshman of the Year. The rookie picked up honors after capturing four podium finishes. Livingston won the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.10, while placing third in the long jump (6.89m), second in the triple jump (14.13m) and third in the 200-meter dash (22.43). Senior Matt Evans earned Most Outstanding Field Performer after capturing the men's heptathlon with 4,998 points on Saturday. Jane't Carothers won the Most Outstanding Athlete and Most Outstanding Track Performer for the women. Carothers earned three podium finishes including victories in the 200-meter dash (24.94) and repeated as champion in the 400-meter dash (56.05), while placing third in the 60-meter dash (7.70). Sophomore Deirdra Morrison earned Co-Most Outstanding Fielder Performer with Georgia Southern's Lynndsey Hyter. Morrison won the shot put (12.98 meters), while earning second in the weight throw (15.51m). Western Carolina senior Alex Dollard finished first in the men's triple jump with a leap 14.29 meters. In the men's 200m dash, senior Dominique Young took first place with a time of 21.84. For the fourth consecutive year, WCU swept the men's and women's sides of the 4x400 relay. The men won with a time of 3:18.18 and were represented by Brandon Hairston, Dominique Young, Drew Tucker and Benny Davis. Competing for the women were Shalyn McMichael, Felicia Paulding, Felisha Garren and Jane't Carothers who recorded a time of 3:49.92. A total of 20 Catamounts earned All-Conference honors as nine women including Olivia Jacobs (third in the 3,000 meter run) and Jettana Thomas (third in the pentathlon) garnered accolades. The Catamount men tallied 11 awards including Cale McDaniel and Ryan Pless in the weight throw events. Newcomers also made a huge impact for WCU as a total of eight Cats earned Southern Conference All-Freshman honors. Garrett West, Lawren Willard, Morgan Turner, Ashley Walla, Valerie Parks, Raven Parrish were on the list as well as Hairston and Livingston.
