Johnson City, Tenn. - Western Carolina's Caleb Bailey and Derrick High led the way for the men's track and field team at the 2001 Southern Conference Tournament.

Bailey won the mile with a time of 4:15.59 while High won the 400 meter dash with WCU record setting time of 47.53. High also placed second in the 200 meter with a time of 21.93. The 4x400 relay team of Jared Maliska, Time Vaught, Irving Hunter and Bola oyegunwa finished second overall with a time of 3:17.42. The men's team finished third overall.

The women's team placed second by only two points behind arch-rival Appalachian State. Ronetta Burgess finished second in the 200 meter dash and the 55 meter hurdles. Burgess set a new school record in both events, the 200 with a time of 24.73 and in the hurdles with a time of 8.07. The 4x400 relay team consisted of Roslyn Bingley, Cedea Bowden, Ashelyn Little and Burgess. They placed second overall with a time of 3:51.04.
