After the first day at the 2002 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, Western Carolina leads the women's competition and host institution East Tennessee State leads the men's meet heading into Saturday's competition.
The Catamounts lead over mountain rival Appalachian State by eight points, while ETSU is a single point up on second place VMI and four points in front of third place, ASU.
WCU's women took first place in a pair of events on Friday, including high jump and sweeping the podium in pole vault, to lead after the first day. Senior Virginia LaCombe flew over a height of 1.70 meters (5'7") to take the top spot in the high jump. Appalachian State's Leigh Anne Ronk and Alison Frese both jumped 1.65 meters to join LaCombe on the podium.
A trio of Catamounts and one Appalachian State vaulter medaled in the women's pole vault competition. The field was paced by a NCAA Provisional height of 3.85 meters (12'7.5") by sophomore Michelle Velez, which also broke the Southern Conference meet record that was held by former WCU vaulter, Valerie Jalajas. Velez was joined by teammates Laura Tieszen (12'3") and Dana Anglin (11'5.75") and Mountaineer vaulter, Suzanne Makinson garnering awards for their vaults.
The WCU men placed fifth in the distance medley relay and Jeb Hall was fifth in the shot put for its four points on the first day.
The 2002 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships wrap-up on Saturday, February 23 in Johnson City, TN. The final day of competition kicks off with the men's 35-lbs. weight final and will end with the mile relays and crowning of the team champions.
