Cullowhee, N.C. - With six events scored on both sides after the first day at the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at Clemson, the Western Carolina men's and women's teams are currently in second place behind rival Appalachian State. The Catamount men posted five podium finishes, including sweeping the high jump competition, while the women recorded a trio of top three finishes with one individual championship.
Freshman Matt Evans claimed his first-ever SoCon title for the men, who trail ASU by 34 points, by out jumping two of his teammates to win the high jump. The Old Fort, N.C., native cleared 2.03 meters (6-8.0) to finish in front of sophomores Daniel Joseph (1.93m, 6-4.0) and Rashad Herndon (1.88m, 6-2.0). In the long jump, senior Mike Malone leaped 6.86 meters (22-6.25) to place third, with sophomore Joel Lynch duplicating Malone's finish in the pole vault after clearing 4.26m (13-11.75).
In the men's shot put, junior Chris Page earned All-SoCon honors with his season-best mark of 14.44 meters (47-4.5).
The Catamount men are potentially set up for a strong afternoon on the track on Sunday. Of the four track events that held preliminary rounds on Saturday, WCU has at least two competitors in each and boasts five in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes.
For Western's women, junior NaShay McGriff captured the lone individual title on the opening day, winning the women's indoor pentathlon with 3,226 points. WCU's distance medley relay squad finished third, and after scoring nine points in the Lady Catamounts' home thumping of the Furman Lady Paladins, two-sport standout Jessika Johnson stepped on the podium in the women's high jump. The defending indoor and outdoor champion, Johnson cleared 1.68 meters (5-6.0) to finish second.
Like the men, WCU has representation in all five of the track events that held preliminary runs on Saturday. The Catamounts boast three individuals in the 60, 200, and 400-meter dashes, with three also in the 60-meter hurdles. SoCon leader Kerrie Savery is Western's lone representative in the 800-meter run, turning the quickest two laps on Saturday at 2:17.56.
Action from Clemson on Sunday gets underway at 10:00 am with the heptathlon events and will culminate with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 5:40 pm, followed by the presentation of the team championship trophies.
