Cullowhee, N.C. - Western Carolina claimed a trio of first place finishes and four seasonal bests on Saturday at the Tiger Invitational indoor track meet in Clemson, S.C., the final regular season competition for the Catamounts prior to the Southern Conference Championships.

Defending Southern Conference Performer of the Week Raquel Ramseur claimed her second-consecutive individual win in the 400-meter dash, crossing the line in 56.03. Her time was the second-quickest of this indoor season, just behind her seasonal best time of a week ago.

With the distance doubled, senior Leslie Martin won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.16 to win the event for the second time this year. Martin, who like Ramseur was honored by the SoCon with weekly honors this season, holds the two top-times for Western this indoor season.

The women also tallied a pair of second place finishes as Ramseur placed second in the 200-meter dash with the second-best seasonal time of 24.72, and senior Laura Tieszen, another former SoCon Performer of the Week, finished second, soaring over a season-best height of 3.95 meters (12-11.5).

Also setting seasonal bests for Western Carolina were Deanna Kulesz in the mile run, manipulating the course in 5:13.03 to finish fifth and Sharhonda Bell in the shot put with a distance of 12.61 meters (41-4.5). Bell finished seventh in the shot competition.

For Western's men, senior Jason Stepp hurled the weight 15.59 meters (51-1.75) to win that event for the Catamounts. The Hendersonville, N.C., native was followed closely by a trio of teammates in the form of Willie Sturgis in fourth, Chris Lewis in fifth, and Matt Decker in sixth in the weight throw.

Junior Lawrence Briscoe placed in a pair of events for the Catamounts, finishing third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.25 and tying for fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.92 meters (6-3.5).

Western returns to action in two weeks, February 25 and 26, at the Southern Conference Championships in Johnson City, Tenn. The Catamount men will look to defend its title from a year ago while the women look to return to the top for the first time since 2000 when the Cats won the second of back-to-back team titles.
