Chapel Hill, N.C. - Darus Cofield and Caleb Bailey were among the standouts for the WCU men's track and field team, while Virginia LaCombe led the women, in the Carolina Fast Times Invitational, held Feb. 8 in Chapel Hill.

Cofield won the 400 meters with a time of 48.79, followed by teammate Milton Bolton (49.51). Bailey, who placed second in the mile, won the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.07. Bailey and Cofield were joined by Bolton and Tebuyus Alford to form the winning 4x400-meter relay team (3:20.44).

The women's 4x400 relay team also brought home top honors. Leslie martin, Cedea Bowden, Ashelyn Little and Ronetta Burgess posted a time of 3:53.81 to edge Duke's team.

Individually, LaCombe won the high jump, clearing 5'8".

After competing in the Tennessee Invitational this weekend (Feb. 15), the Catamounts will head to East Tennessee State for the Southern Conference Championships, which takes place Feb. 22-23. Western's men's team currently sit atop the most recent SoCon Track & Field Power rankings, while the women's team is second.

Cofield currently has the top time in the 400 meters (48.62) and is part of the top 4x400-meter relay team (3:17.98). Justin Davis leads the SoCon in the long jump (23'2") and Nick McNeil is the league leader in the weight throw (55'6.25").

For the women, Burgess has the conference's leading time in the 200 meters (25.36), 55-meter hurdles (7.99) and 60-meter hurdles (8.52). The Catamounts own the top time in the distance medley relay (12,41.48) and have the league's top pole vaulter in Michelle Velez (13'0") and high jumper in LaCombe (5'10"). Both Velez and LaCombe have also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships with their performances.
