University Park, Pa. - Western Carolina's track & field teams finished day one late Friday night in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. Mitchell takes a second place finish in the 60-meter dash and Thomas Funderburk finished third in the long jump event.
Senior Manteo Mitchell tied a Penn State facility record in the 60-meter dash with a blazing 6.76 time. Mitchell was beat out by Auburn runner Marcus Rowland, who qualified for the NCAA event. Junior Dominique Young placed fourth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.88.
In the 60-meter hurdles event, Junior Christian Bethune took fifth and sophomore Jordan Blazer took sixth respectively for the Catamounts.
In the long jump event senior Thomas Funderburk placed third leaping 7.00 meters (22 ft-11.75 inches). Funderburk missed first place by less then a foot at 23 ft- .75 inches.
The Catamounts continue with day two of the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup in University Park, Pa. Saturday afternoon.
