Clemson, S.C. - The Western Carolina men and women's indoor track team wrapped up another successful meet on Saturday, placing a season-high 17 individuals in the top-three at the Clemson Games.

Both the men and women's squads finished among the top-three in podium finishes along with Auburn and Clemson. The WCU men edged Auburn, who were ranked No. 18 in the recent United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Poll (USTFCCCA), with 10 top-3 finishes compared to the Tigers eight.

Benny Davis and Cornelius Williams both earned individual titles in their respective events. On Friday, Davis collected the men's 400-meter dash title in 49.63 seconds. Williams earned his first season victory in the triple jump with a distance of 14.55 meters.

Senior Matt Evans set a school record in the heptathlon with a total of 5,034 points, while placing second in the event. Evans earned first in the high jump (2.08m), shot put (13.47m), second in the long jump (6.36m) and third in the pole vault (3.90m).

Also in the triple jump, Cordell Livingston placed third with a high-mark of 13.67 meters, his second podium finish in the meet. The men's `A' 4x400 relay team (Brandon Hairston, Dominique Young, Drew Tucker and Benny Davis) finished second with a time of 3:19.41.

 

 

Drew Tucker paced himself in the 800-meter run with a fourth place finish after running the event in 1:56.39. Cale McDaniel set the WCU season-high in the shot put with a distance of 15.74 meters for a third place standing.

The Catamount women made another strong showing in the Clemson Game running events with three podium finishes on Saturday.

Olivia Jacobs ran the 3,000 meter run in a season-high 10:22.40 minutes, earning second in the event.

Senior Tiana Jones grabbed third in the triple jump with a mark of 11.75 meters. The WCU `A' 4x400 relay team(Shalyn McMichael, Felisha Garren, Felicia Paulding) and Jane't Carothers) earned third in a time of 3:45.99.

Sophomore Deirdra Morrison earned her second top-three mark in the Clemson Games with a throw of 11.79 meters in the shot put.

"I feel like we have made some progress in areas that we needed to concentrate on," said Catamount coach Danny Williamson.

"I am proud of the way we competed. We looked at this meet as an opportunity to show that we can compete at the highest level, regardless of what the name is on the uniform. We take great pride in representing Western Carolina University."

WCU returns to Clemson University in two weeks for the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday, February 13.
